In order to market a profitable affiliate campaign, you will have to learn about search engine optimization(SEO). With thousands of web sites popping up everyday, you need to get your site listed. SEO Basics

Before you begin serious SEO you must ensure that your web site is "search engine friendly". This means making sure that each individual page is compliant with search engine standards and ready to be indexed correctly. Follow each of the steps below for each page on your site:

1. Target a keyword or phrase

  • Try to start out with a keyword or phrase that you have interest in. Get a Domain Name with the keyword in it!!
  • Do not use a keyword that no one would search for.
  • Use keywords that relate to your content.
  • Only use generally popular keywords if you do not need targeted traffic.
  • Do not use words that search engines will ban or filter you for.
  • Do not use words in alt or title tags that will get you banned or filtered.
  • Only use dynamic pages when the functionality demands it.(Flash is a SEO killer)
  • Use lots of relevant words with well laid out coded pages.
  • Try to optimize each page for a key word or phrase.
  • Finish the Web site!!

2. Have correct Meta Tags

  • Page Title-The title of the HTML page should be relatively short and describe the page content accurately. Wherever possible, try to include keywords (without distorting the true purpose of the title).
  • Meta Tags-Use the description and keywords meta tags in the head of each web page. Make sure these tags are different for each web page.
    • <meta name="description" content="Your description">
    • <meta name="keywords" content="keyword, keyword, keyword">
  • Heading tags. Many search engines place more emphasis on text within heading tags, so make sure you use keywords. Use one <h1> tag per page with the most important keywords. Use other head tags (<h2>, <h3>, etc) to provide variations and support the main heading.

3. File Names and ALT Tags

  • All file names should be SEO' d to match your keyword or phrase. If you have a image on a domain marketing site, the image should be saved with domain-marketing.jpg
  • Your images should be described via ALT Tags with the keywords you are optimizing for.

4. Content

  • The text on the page should contain the keywords right at the beginning of the page.
  • Do not overuse keywords.
